A costume designed as a work of art. Delivered as a production.

Who am I?

Design and delivery in one pair of hands.

I create original, hand-drawn costume designs grounded in close reading of the text and research, and see them through to opening night: budget, orders, workroom, fittings, logistics. One person accountable for the costume, from the first pencil line to the final invoice.

Craft

What I do

Every design is a hand-drawn piece in its own right, rooted in the text, in research and in a solid command of the craft.

  • 01Hand-drawn designs, each one a piece in its own right
  • 02In-depth analysis of the text and characters
  • 03Formal and visual research, palette, fabric key
  • 04Technique: cuts, fabrics, embellishment, screen printing
  • 05Functional costume, built for movement, dance and quick changes
  • 06Close collaboration with performers and the creative team

Management

How I work

Budget, deadlines and logistics run alongside the design, just as they did during my three years on staff at a theatre.

  • 01Cost estimates and control of the costume budget
  • 02A schedule synchronised with rehearsals and opening night
  • 03Orders, deliveries and materials logistics
  • 04Invoicing and liaison with accounts
  • 05Theatre stock, alterations, recycling
  • 06Fittings and costume logistics for large companies

Process

From script to premiere.

Five stages in which every creative decision comes with its cost, deadline and maker attached from the outset. So what reaches the workroom is a design that has been tested, costed and is ready to be sewn.

Step 01

Text and synthesis

Analysis of the text and characters. A collage moodboard: photographs, cuttings, drawings, shapes.

  • Breakdown of characters, scenes and costume changes
  • Concept discussions with the director and set designer
  • Initial budget and work schedule
Step 02

Palette

Cropping the moodboard and sampling colours, a palette for the whole production.

  • Consistency with the set and lighting design
  • Colour tests under stage lighting
  • A colour hierarchy for characters and groups
Step 03

Fabric key

Material swatches and hands-on tests. Coherence across the whole design.

  • Swatches plus sewing, washing and dyeing tests
  • Availability, prices and delivery times
  • Flame-retardancy and stage safety requirements
Step 04

Designs

Hand-drawn designs with technical solutions, created with movement in mind.

  • Technical specifications for the workroom
  • Movement, dance and quick changes in the wings
  • Cost estimate and use of the theatre’s stock
Step 05

Production

Fittings, alterations, sign-off. A costume ready for the dress rehearsal.

  • Fittings and alterations with the cast
  • Costume parades and the dress rehearsal under full lighting
  • Costume record cards, final accounts, documentation
